The Spirograph game was developed by Leeds engineer Denys Fisher in the early 1960s from his home studio in Scholes as part of his passion for mathematics and geometry.

Spirographs blur the line between geometry and art. When spirographs are mentioned, a first thought probably goes to the kids’ art toy—but who says it’s just for kids?! After this issue’s cover artist introduced me to spirographing at a Piscopia Initiative event, my first task was a trip to Smyths toys superstores to grab myself a kit.

“Spirograph World Map” is a collage of individually colored Spirograph patterns that form a colorful map of the world. British artist Rachel Evans created the work over the course of two months (see a time-lapse here). Prints of the collage are available on Redbubble.
